Technical Administrator

Biffa is currently looking for a Technical Administrator (Haz Waste) the purpose of the role is to efficiently receive and process enquiries, provide technical support to the business and to advise on all relevant/current legislation as appropriate i.e. Duty of Care, Hazardous Waste regulations and the Carriage of Dangerous Goods.



PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES



• To assess technical waste enquiries for acceptance into Biffa’s hazardous waste transfer stations and thereby, to ensure that waste streams being assessed comply with the Permit and any relevant pre-acceptance criteria.
• To assess technical wastes for transport on the Haz Waste Packaged Goods and Bulk fleets and thereby, to manage the production of compliant transport paperwork, avoiding the imposition of fines, compliance points (permit and O licence) and the threat of prosecution.
• To ensure that the Haz Waste Division’s packaged goods sales enquiries are costed and priced efficiently, ensuring that our legal duties to secure compliant disposal routes are, at all times maintained and that this information can be provided, monitored and reported upon in a manner which consistently supports the division with the achievement of its business ambitions.
• To manage the processing and rectification of Haz Waste operational Non-Conformances, ensuring that responsibilities for actions are apportioned, that learning opportunities are secured, that actions are tracked and that the possibility of Biffa or our customers incurring enforcement action is minimised.
• To identify the relevant assessment criteria for samples and advise both internal and external laboratories and to interpret the resultant data.
• To provide group-wide technical and legislative support/advice to Commercial and Operational teams with respect to the classification of waste and its compliant transport to and from waste management facilities.
• Maintain daily reporting functions, contributing to the production of commercial reports, operational reports and reporting to the Environment Agency and to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.



NATURE AND SCOPE



This is extremely complex role which demands a high level of knowledge and experience and the ability to work across the entire breadth of the business, working at many levels and with a wide range of stakeholders, from account managers, to customers, to suppliers, maintaining the Company’s corporate image at all times. The job holder must possess the integrity to defend Biffa’s hard won reputation for, whilst ensuring that opportunities for compliant revenue generation are secured and developed. The job holder must be able to do this whilst operating to short timescales within the commercial cut and thrust of the Haz Waste business but also within the group as a whole.



PERSON SPECIFICATION



• Minimum GCSE or equivalent in Maths & English.
• A Level Chemistry (or similar).
• Science Degree (Chemistry or similar).
• IT literate : proficient in using Microsoft Office software.
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
• Effective time management skills.
• Ability to work effectively unsupervised.
• Ability to deal with conflict and negotiate / manage the appropriate outcome.
• Organised with the ability to simplify complex issues.
• Analytical; data driven decision making.
• Shows initiative, to decide appropriate actions to achieve necessary outcomes.
• Ability/willingness to work flexibly if required (e.g. sickness/holiday cover)
• Ability to consider wider business issues.
• Ability to effectively manage and prioritise workload.
• Experience of working within a corporate environment.
• Full, clean UK Driving Licence : willingness to travel within the UK for business meetings and project work at other locations.
