JOB PURPOSE



Working closely with the Head of Area Development (North) and key stakeholders to drive business performance/growth that supports continuous improvement in productivity, quality, service provision and best in class performance; to manage and support regional projects and initiatives that contribute to business performance/growth; to support M&A activity in the North in line with the I&C business strategy; to manage across a number of depots providing additional support where required to Depots in crisis/cover for Depot Managers as required.



PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES



1 Monitor, manage and co-ordinate across a geographical area to drive business performance and growth.

2 To drive best practice and continuous improvement in cost control and productivity.

3 Defines and supports the development of staff by identifying and sharing best practice.

4 Manages and ensure compliance of Health & Safety, Environmental, Employment legislation and Company policy to ensure defined standards and best practice are adhered to.

5 Manages projects and initiatives using best practice and through continuous improvement, including supporting merger and acquisition activity.

6 Work within cross-divisional teams to provide integrated waste solutions using best practice and through continuous improvement.

7 Support the Mergers and Acquisition activity in line with the business strategy.

• Monitors and manages across a regions and Area, ensure optimum performance and financial growth

• Develops the operation and teams to meet financial and efficiency targets through a continuous improvement approach

• Sets and agrees clear objectives with all operational staff, regularly monitoring their performance and taking corrective action where appropriate

• Ensure core performance metrics are met and where possible exceeded.



People Management and Team Work



• Coaches staff where appropriate

• Optimises resources and continuously reviews the operations to improve profitability and customer service, managing change where necessary

• Leads and motivates staff through positive employee engagement through open communication

• Identifying and sharing best practice with peers

• Work closely with the company’s Continuous Improvement team to introduce new working practices and to develop a continuous improvement culture

Integrity

• Ensures that all relevant legislative requirements are adhered to and that Company procedures and standards (including Health and Safety, personnel, finance and Transport) are maintained. Where necessary making regular checks in all parts of the operation including the branch site, vehicles and customer premises and ensuring that all operational equipment is maintained

• Deals with disciplinary matters, including dismissals, and appeals and grievances in line with Company policy

• Informs staff of changes in terms and conditions

• Ensures appropriate consultation with TU/Staff Representatives



PERSON SPECIFICATION



Education / Qualifications



• Minimum GCSE or equivalent in Maths & English

• CPC

• ‘A’ Level/Degree

• IOSH Certificate



Experience



• Extensive experience as Depot Manager or position of similar responsibility in Services or Logistics industry

• People and health & safety management in a unionised environment

• Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPI’s

• Proven track record of delivering continuous improvement within an operational / service environment

• Profit & Loss experience

• Lean Management Understanding

• Experience with route planning software such as Route Monkey, DPS (LogiX) etc



Technical Knowledge



• Local geographical knowledge

• Good transport / logistics knowledge

• Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working within a time critical service

• Waste industry knowledge including relevant laws

• Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation environment

• Knowledge of production management



Skills and Behaviours



• Strong Commercial background

• Experience of operational line management

• Experienced in people management in a Trade Union environment

• Experience of managing in a labour intensive, multi-shift environment
