Financial Analyst - Truro

Responsibility for all accounting and preparation of the management accounts and reporting of selected business units in the Division. The role works closely with the operational management (typically the Cornwall senior management team & depot business managers) in the business to ensure robust financial controls are in place and adhered to on a day-to-day basis, reporting through the Finance function at a Divisional & Group level.


1 Preparation of monthly management accounts, including variance analyses and bridges, for each of the selected business units, to meet reporting deadlines and provide useful feedback/explanations of financial performance to finance and non-finance-personnel.

2 Participate in the preparation of monthly financial reporting packs to assist the FBP in meeting the deadlines for submission with clear and accurate data.

3 Attendance of and contribution to monthly regional meetings

4 Support Senior BM in production of Cornwall Council monthly invoice

5 Monthly CAPEX reporting and forecast updates to support analysis against budget and decision making.

6 Assist FBPs and operations in the preparation of budgets, forecasts and five-year plans for the business units of responsibility so that accurate and up-to-date financial information is used.

7 Consolidate budgets, forecasts and five-year plans for the division to ensure timely and accurate submission to Central Finance.

8 Review (or compile) balance sheet reconciliations to ensure adherence to Group policy.

9 Provide end of year audit support giving full and adequate explanations to auditors where requested so that testing can be completed on a timely basis.

10 Support FBPs and non-finance personnel, providing financial data to assist in commercial decision making.

11 Provide cover for the Divisional Finance Team as required so that processes can continue uninterrupted during holidays/absence.

12 Other ad-hoc requirements as requested by the Cornwall senior management team & Municipal Divisional Finance Team.


The accountabilities that account for most of their time are:

• Primary contact for the Business’ Operational team for all financial matters. - Daily

• Ensure Biffa’s financial controls and processes are followed. - Daily

• Ensuring period-end close and submissions are made on time and in full. : 7-10 days each month, but highest priority

• To lead the investigation and query resolution for any issues that arises on the site/ depot/TS P&Ls. : Daily

Planning horizons / timescales are typically weekly (flash forecast reviews) and monthly (month end completion and monthly trading reviews), however they are involved in quarterly forecasts and annual budgets.

The specialist and technical substance of the job include being computer literate with advanced excel skills and management accounting experience preferably gained in the service, logistics or waste industries. Ideally a graduate, part-qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA or ACA) or QBE and experience of working with and supporting operational, commercial staff across multiple locations is required.

The FA has a certain degree of autonomy and is responsible for their respective business area(s), however, they must also ensure Biffa’s financial controls are adhered to and ensure that their region does not act in a way that would be detrimental to the rest of the division of group.

The Financial Analyst reports to the Finance Business Partner : South and the key internal interfaces are with Senior Financial, Operational and Commercial Managers and staff across the division.


Education / Qualifications

• Graduate, part qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA or ACA) or QBE


• Experience of working with and supporting operational, commercial staff across multiple locations

• Waste/logistics industry

• Large multi-site operations

• Geographically dispersed sites and remote working

Technical Knowledge

• Computer literate, advanced excel skills necessary

• Management accounting experience gained in the service, logistics or waste industries an advantage

• Experience of MS Navision
