Data Manager

Biffa PLC is currently on the lookout for a Data Manager to work from our main IT hub in Loudwater (High Wycombe). Biffa has made significant progress on business transformation and a digital journey to the cloud. Modernising business processes and technological platforms, enabling people and leveraging data and insight are key to modern success. Biffa is also growing significantly through mergers and acquisitions and therefore successful integration of these businesses and their data is critical. Good quality data underpins success of all these processes. The Data Manager is a key new role within Business Intelligence and the wider group IT function.

Reporting into the Head of MI, there are three key aspects to the Data Manager role.

Facing into the business to manage stakeholders, projects and programme deliverables, owning and driving data initiatives and migration projects between IT systems as required

Leading safe delivery of high quality data through acquisition processes, from vendor to target system, ensuring it is fit-for-purpose and delivered to schedule

Line manage several data analysts, aligning and overseeing delivery of their workloads to ensure consistently high quality information inputs and outputs

Working within a wider BI and IT function, the Data Manager line-manages up to three analysts with a variety of day-to-day reporting deliverables. The role necessitates building strong relationships with key stakeholders, delivering with strong project management and governance processes to deliver successful data acquisition and migration projects, often to challenging standards and timelines.


• Plan, manage, lead and deliver all phases of the data work-stream for merger and acquisition activity, working closely with the Project Managers, area and work-stream leads and Head of MI to highlight opportunities, risks and issues.
• To ensure the safe extraction, processing and delivery of data from internal and external source systems to target system, ensuring it is fit-for purpose and delivered on time. This will involve ensuring that the master data loaded into the systems is of the highest possible quality and compliant with GDPR.
• Develop, enhance and own the data management and data quality approach for Biffa systems, including any documentation and quality standards. This includes data enrichment, data templates, structures, mapping and loading processes as the business transitions data and processes to new business systems and across technical environments
• Work with the business to review cleanse recommendations and oversee any cleansing activities, both manual and automated, enforcing rigorous controls to ensure activities are complete and accurately. Introduce suitable measures to ensure sustained data quality following cleansing activities
• Manage the data analysts in the MI team (recruit, motivate, manage, monitor, review and develop) consisting of up to five data analysts.
• Agree, scope, advise and manage the expectations of key stakeholders to understand and deliver their data requirements, influencing projects/stakeholders where necessary to stay aligned with wider context.
• Identify, develop and implement any necessary data profiling tools and techniques to better understand the breadth and quality of data in Biffa, identifying areas of risk and opportunity and proposing action
• Identify, initiate and conduct ad hoc data projects as agreed with the Head of MI and through relevant project governance structures as necessary.
• Foster and develop recognition across the business of the importance of high quality data and drive a culture of continuous improvement in data quality. Develop a network of data stewards around the business to champion and deliver this.
• Report and provide analysis of the ongoing performance of key data migration and quality improvement projects. Design, develop and deliver key metrics and reporting on data to relevant Stakeholders
• Support the MI team in the delivery of high quality data and reporting to all areas of the business as necessary
• Work closely with the technical architect to produce a strong future state application/data architecture and interim state architectures.

• A semi-autonomous role, however required to work within and align to the wider BI team norms and ways of working

• Works as a ‘supplier’, partner and/or ‘customer’ to other internal IT teams
• May interact with suppliers, customers, implementation and software partners, and recruitment firms
• Develops, directs and influences a network of data stewards, providing guidance and structure


• Proven track record as a data cleansing and migration lead.
• Project management experience
• Line management experience
• Working within a governance framework
• Experience of working with third party organisations, including ERP providers / software integrators and data analysis/cleansing companies.
• Experience of data migration in a major transformation programme, with multiple releases/deployments.
• Knowledge of data migration tools
• Knowledge of data profilers, e.g. Data Cleaner or Talend.
• Detailed knowledge of data schemas
